The sarabande is an old Mexican dance that often appears in Baroque suites. The dance has a slow tempo and is written in a simple triple metre, usually with a time signature of 3/2, with a slightly stressed second beat.

This Sarabande with two variations by Handel (1685-1759), which forms the fourth part of his Suite in D-minor for solo harpsichord, has become particularly famous due to its beautiful and somewhat melancholic mood, and is frequently played in many other settings.
