PIANO TEXTbook 2 contains 49 compositions and 46 scale exercises. As in the other NOTUS Piano Textbooks, the compositions are arranged in ascending levels of difficulty and new terminology and notation items are clarified underneath the compositions. The pieces span different styles and cultural periods. Also included are several lighter pieces such as a simplified version of The Entertainer by Scott Joplin and Autumn Leaves by Joseph Kosma.
A significant portion of the compositions span two or even three pages and some pieces are intentionally included to pose a real challenge. The study of these pieces requires more time and is aimed at strengthening the learner’s musical insight.
Integrated music theory.
PIANO TextBook 2 contains only one Music Theory Intermezzo. But what an intermezzo! This is the fourth Music Theory Intermezzo in total.
The structure of major and minor scales is explained in detail, as well as how to use the NOTUS intervals legend to easily notate all the scales without having to memorize them. Attention is given to the degrees of a scale and how these scale degrees relate to each other to create tension in the composition of melodies. This is followed by an introduction to relative keys, a discussion of the conventional key signature and the new NOTUS key signature. Also included is a detailed explanation of the NOTUS Arc of Fifths, which is almost similar to the conventional Circle of Fifths.
After this music theory intermezzo, all ascending and descending major scales and the melodic and harmonic minor scales are notated on the staff including their fingerings. That’s a total of 54 scales. As such, it is a handy section to refer to in the future and it also serves as the study material for practicing and playing the scales.
